The Charitable Foundation "A Country to Live in" is launching an urgent targeted drive to purchase clothing vouchers in support of people following their release, helping them acquire essential items.
A new group of former political prisoners has been deported from Belarus without any belongings or documents. It is almost impossible for any of us to imagine being in their position. But we must try.
These people have endured repression and mistreatment. They sometimes arrive with us still in prison-issue clothing, sometimes in the same clothes they were arrested in. What they have is often the wrong season and the wrong size — and so the need for basic clothing is immediate. Can a person feel truly free when they are still wearing a prison jacket with the marks of a cut-off yellow identification tag?
Note: In Belarusian prisons, inmates are required to wear a yellow tag bearing their prisoner number. The visible traces left after it is removed are a stark marker of incarceration.
We plan to purchase gift vouchers for shopping centres worth €150 per person. This allows each individual to choose clothing that suits their own size, needs and preferences.
New clothing is, above all, an opportunity to feel like a dignified human being again. Making an independent choice — even in something as simple as picking a shirt — is a step toward rebuilding one's sense of self and returning to a normal life.
